What To Do About Misinformation...?

What To Do About Misinformation...?

Social Media Is a Huge source of information - not all of it is GOOD information. Urban legends, myths, conspiracy theories and other types of false information are everywhere, and it can be difficult to determine what is really true. It's bad enough if this type of information would affect or even harm us individually, but we know that it can also affect us on a global scale, such as spreading misinformation about the COVID-19 virus.

Obviously, we have to learn how to identify information that might be biased or untrue - but what about those sources that host the information, such as Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube? What responsibilities do they have?

Watch the 60 Minutes video linked below It talks about YouTube and its policies regarding invalid or harmful information. What do you think? Should entities like YouTube, Facebook, etc. be responsible for blocking or identifying misinformation, or should it be the responsibility of the viewer to educate themselves about how to spot "fake news"?

(If you have trouble getting to this link, I've also attached the video to this blog assignment in Google Classroom.)

  1. I feel like youtube, facebook, etc are big deals on misinformation but we need to remember that it's not the social media, It is the people who are posting either incorrect information or making wrong suggestions about something, making it "fake news." If you are thinking about posting something that involves a lie, just don't do it.

    1. I agree, people need to research more what they'ree talking about, and others need to be able to tell if the information theyre getting is the truth.

    2. I agree. a solution to that problem is also just not believe everything you see.

    3. I agree. I think that you can look at the internet for some things, but don't believe everything you see.

  3. I think that companies like Youtube, Facebook, and others, need to get better at stopping the spread of misinformation. They have a responsibility to their viewers and users to get rid of misinformation. But at the same time people need to go to more reliable sources for information, and learn how to spot fake news. Youtube or Facebook are probably not the best place to get your news.

    6. I agree with Olivia misinformation will often spread very fast throughout the internet. And youtube probably wouldn't be your best choice for the news.

  4. I think that platforms like youtube and facebook should try their best to take down misinformation but they aren't going to be able to take all of it down. So then it's up to the viewer to decide what they believe.

    1. I agree, People need to be able to scope out what is true and fake on the internet, and not rely on it for everything.

    2. I agree, people need to really think and see if the information they are getting is true or not.

    3. I agree, people need to make the right decisions and not lie on what they post so that a viewer can see the truth.

    4. I agree. I think that large platforms should work harder to take down things that are not factual.

    5. I agree with you. I think people need to be able to think for themselves instead of relying solely on other people. The companies should also take part in trying to combat the issue of fake news, but they're not completely responsible, either.

    6. I agree, too. People should have enough common sense to fact check things on the internet before they just believe it.

  5. I think it should be both the companies and the users. Because the companies can do their best to prevent the spread of misinformation, but the can't stop everything. So users have to be able to keep an eye out for what may or may not me misinformation.

  6. I think that these big sites, do have a responsibilities to keep out fake news and misinformation. I do however think that they can never be sure they have all of it. I also think policies should be tightened regarding things like that video of the prisoners. I think some things need to be policed more. Although I do think it is also the watchers responsibility to question for themselves and distinguish possible fake news. I think it is an effort that needs to be fulfilled through both parties.

    1. I agree with you Kylee, they won't be able to stop all of it. Yes some things need to be policed a lot more.

    2. I agree, websites do try, but they can't stop everything

  7. I feel like the bigger websites could do more to stop the misinformation but I don't think anyone will be able to stop it entirely. In my opinion I think it is more on the people who are looking at those videos and posts. They are going to ask themselves if this is a logical post and/or video. They could also look at other webpages to follow up and see if it is true or not. But I do think that the big websites can stop things like misinformation.

    2. This is a good point, Olivia! I think it's important for companies to try and manage some of the fake news on their platform, but it's impossible to get rid of all of it, so the audience needs to be able to think for themselves and come to a conclusion about what they're reading or seeing.

    3. I agree Olivia they should take some of it down but they definitely can't take all of it down.

  9. I think that the big sites are having trouble stopping the misinformation, because these sites are huge and there is so much being posted on them. It's just about impossible to stop all of it. The user just has to be careful.

    3. Yes I agree, it is partly on the user to be able to recognize fake news and misinformation because these sites cannot be completely responsible for all of it

  10. I think social media companies could be doing a little bit more to help stop fake news from being too widespread, but at the same time, the viewers should also be more aware of what's real and what's not, and should make an effort to educate themselves, as well. If you can't recognize what fake news is, you're part of the problem too, it's not just the companies that need to police everything for fake news.

  11. I think that social media platforms, like Youtube and Facebook should try their hardest to take down known non factual information but they can only do so much. People need to realize they can't believe everything they see on the internet. I also believe it's not the platforms fault, but the people posting them.

    3. very true tony, with all the people on those sites I think the system to fact check all of the news would be bigger that the platform of the app or site itself.

  12. Personally I believe that these websites should try to block this fake information, however they should not be held accountable when fake news blows up on their sites. By this day and age in technology people should know to check sources and that not all sources are reliable.

  15. I think that giant media sites like Facebook or Youtube should be more responsible about not spreading fake news or harmful content. Facebook should take down that Trump add because it has been proven to be fake news. It would impossible to go through every video on Youtube, so people should be educated about how to spot fake news by themselves.

  16. misinformation and fake news seem to be pretty relevant in today's age and in major social media platforms such as youtube. I think that people have the right to say whatever news they want but should not false advertise something to benefit their own need. I think fake news shifts the opinions of people in politics mostly and propaganda really makes its way into fake news too.

  17. I think that misinformation is something that you will never be able to get rid of. It will always be a thing because as hard as platforms try, they won't be able to stop everyone from posting things that aren't true. It is not the platforms fault that people are sharing fake news. We shouldn't believe everything we see on the internet.

    1. Yes, people have to be smart enough to know when something doesn't look right. It would be extremely difficult to catch all misinformation.

  18. I think that to some extent, these platforms need at least some control of what is being being posted, but sometimes it can't always be done as thoroughly as we want it to. With the amount of content people are putting out there it's impossible to look through every single thing and fact check it and make sure it's appropriate. I thing that in using these websites we need to understand that a good bit of it is probably false, and we need to accept that when we decide to use it.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I think that, though it is the platform's job to try and limit, if not eliminate the spread of fake news, people should also have a little more responsibility with reading things by fact checking their sources before they just believe it.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I think that they should try to limit the use of misinformation because youtube has so many viewers and if they see some misinformation it could start to spread and sometimes its not a good situation.I just think they should get rid of some of the misinformation.but they definitely can't get all of it.

  21. Social media sites definitely need to get into stopping the spread of false information. especially in cases like this pandemic, if someone on facebook says it's okay to be within 6 feet of someone but it's really not okay, that causes problems for everyone.
