The Skills Gap

The Skills Gap

After watching the 60 Minutes report, (link below), discuss the following in your post, and posted conversations during the week:

Despite the fact that the U.S. has a very high unemployment rate, there are some career areas where there are thousands of jobs available that can't be filled.  Why is this?

What can be done - who, according to the video, should have a greater role in this? Who do YOU think should handle the training - or the cost of the training?

As you've thought about what career path you might follow, have you considered the schooling or training that's required?

Be sure to discuss all of these questions, at least in your first post.

  1. Some areas of work cannot be filled because you would need a high school and/or college diploma to get certain jobs. Nevada had many great jobs filled until construction started going on there, at that point, many jobs were lost. For my future career, I wanted to go into the HVAC business (Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning). I know what I need to do for school and where I need to go. All of my training can simply be done in WITC Superior.

  3. I think that the jobs that are not being filled are the jobs that you need more than just a high school diploma for. I think that be helping students get interested into going into pre-college programs and such. This way people would be in the position to take over those jobs that need to be filled.

    3. I agree that students in high school should definitely be more interested in going to college

    4. I agree Tonio, people are just too lazy to get training.

    5. I also agree, students should be interested in college, maybe they can even try college classes.

    6. i 100% agree with you tonio

    7. I agree with you tones its just a matter if that person is really interested in that job and goes to college for it.

    8. I agree with you tony, if something is to work out people need to be interested in it.

    9. I agree with you, I think there is a lack of interest in secondary education like college, but I also think part of it is due to the fact that a lot of people can't afford to go to college.

    10. I agree Tony lots of jobs need people with more schooling than only high school.

  4. A lot of jobs have a need of skills that require training, that people aren't interested in putting their time in, and that is why jobs cannot be filled. I think in schooling exposing kids to training and opportunities in certain fields can really help increase interest. I think when it comes to training most of it should be done prior to the job in some schooling but I think it would also be helpful for a business themselves to offer training of some sort. I don't really know what I want to do out of school yet, but I will be willing to get the necessary training required when I find the right job for me.

    1. I agree, if a business requires extremely special training that could've been hard to find somewhere else, the business should offer that training.

    2. I agree Kyle, because training should be taught prior to the job.

      Delete
    3. I agree, if schools started training at a younger age they could become a lot more interested and drawn to that field.

    4. I agree, many people don't want to put the time into this.

    5. I agree, i think schools and companies should have strong training before a job

      Delete
    6. I also agree because if they're enjoying the training then they are getting more used to it and they could possibly be getting more interested in that field.

  5. A lot of jobs out there require specific training and jobs wont hire you if you don't have that training. I think if a company can afford to do the training then they should let people do the training under their business. For my career path i will be going to college to get the special training I need.

    1. I agree, if a company want workers that are dedicated, they should provide that opportunity

    2. I also agree, if a person has the dedication, they should seek the opportunities they have and start working on it as soon as possible.

    3. I agree, companies can't expect all new hires to have specific training for their new jobs.

  6. I think a lot of people don’t want to put the time and effort into their education after high school. If more workplaces offered special training for that job I think more people would apply to them. The company should be paying for this training. I would be more drawn to the job if they gave special training.

    1. I agree, most people do not want to apply because they aren't getting that training they need.

    2. Some people put alot of time in training but some company's wont do a training process.

    3. I agree, more people would jet jobs right out of school if they didn't need to pay for training.

  7. You need special training for lots of jobs out there, and thats why I think that their are lots of jobs needing workers but cant find any, because people are too lazy to get trained. If a person wants the job, but doesnt have any training, the job should provide them with the right training before getting the job.

    1. I agree 100% ty. People need to have training before just going to the job

    2. i agree with both of on case some are lazy or do not try to go to college
but if they do not go to college they can not get a good job

      Delete
    3. I agree but it is not only that the people are lazy sometimes they just don't have the money to pay for the training.

      Delete
    4. I agree about some people being lazy and not getting out there and making an effort, but I think there has to be an effort made by the company's as well.

  8. For a lot of jobs you need special training. A company shoud pay for all the training that they would need. Many people don't want to pay or put the time into getting that training and that's why they do not get it. For me and what I want to do, I would be willing to get the special training I would need to be successful in my job.

    1. That's a good point. If jobs are requiring you to have special training for them, they should provide the means to get the training.

    3. I agree with you Olivia, many people don't want to, or can't pay for this special training.

    4. I agree, if a company wants good people to work with them, then they should provide training

      Delete
    5. I agree because a lot of people im sure want to get into training but they just don't have that much money.so I agree that the company should pay for the training.

    6. This is a really good point, Olivia! Companies often expect their future employees to pay for the special training that their particular company requires, which can be off-putting for some people.

  9. i think the company should do the training process there is alot of jobs that requires training but alot of company's wont train people.

    1. I agree, not a lot of places have available training programs.

    2. I agree with that, in fact they used to do that in big companies down in chicago back before we were born and you could work your way up to the top ut now you need a college education to get anywhere

      Delete
  10. I think part of why people don't necessarily get the necessary training that they need to get some jobs is because of how expensive the training for those jobs can be. A lot of colleges are very expensive to go to, and many people don't have the money to afford to get a degree. I think the companies looking to hire should offer some sort of training for the jobs they are looking to fill instead of just relying on the education system to help them, while paying for it at the same time.

    ReplyDelete
  11. I think that it's unreasonable for companies to expect new hires to already have the specific skills they need to preform some jobs (like specific manufacturing jobs) without training from the company. Colleges can't be expected to train students with every possible job and scenario they might encounter with that degree, so it should be up to the company to make sure they can do their jobs safely and correctly.

    1. That's a great point Haley. People don't always have the time or resources right out of college to get the right training for jobs. And the company should provide any special training that it requires.

    2. I agree, some companies ask for really specific skills, and theres really no where you can learn them besides from that business.

    1. I agree hanna a person has a better chance of being interested if they tried the training instead of not.

  16. I think a big reason a lot of these jobs aren't being filled is because the employers are already expecting them to know these high level skills that they can't really learn anywhere but very specialized, expensive training. I don't see how companies can expect people to know this stuff if no where is doing any kind of inclusive or lower cost training, even internships.

    1. Yes I agree, I think companies have to make some sort of effort to improve the training for their business's. A lot of people aren't able to get that training and it would really helpful to be able to get that training in the company.

  17. I think that it can't be filled because for lots of these jobs you need to have more schooling than just high school and some people do not have the money to go to college. To fix this I think that companies could have training programs so people do not have to pay as much but still get the same education that they need for the job.

  18. In my personal opinion I think that unemployment is a big problem and the skill gap is a even bigger problem. Our society is competitive about how well we live and today people are getting lazy to where they don't want to do the hard work to have the good life. This causes a difference in the people who have drive to be successful and the others who don't care, this creates a gap that people don't want to fill in because no one is willing to work hard enough to do a certain job.

  19. I believe that certain jobs not being filled are largely due to the fact that they not only require more than a GED, but in some cases MANY years of college. Some ideas to fix this is either to lower certain education standards for jobs or simply make it simpler to achieve the needed education. Currently I am looking to go into a trade, and my main one is one that i actually already have an offer to work for, that being an electrician. This would require none, but if so very little schooling after high school.

    1. I agree. There should be lower standards for certain things so society can conform to the skills gap.

  20. I feel that a lot of the jobs in the field right now are asking too much of people. They want people with a GED and maybe even more. But there's very high standards to get into colleges, and they're expensive. Most people don't have the resources, or the money to get the education required for these jobs. So, I think that if it was easier and more affordable to get education for these jobs, they would fill a lot faster.

    1. good point, education is getting more expensive

    2. I agree. They expect too much and it's getting harder and harder to reach those standards.

  21. Special training it expensive at best, so there should be some kind of reciprocity for putting that kind of money into a job. Especially because you probably don't have money for it in the first place.
