IoT: The Internet of Things

IoT: The Internet of Things

- The screen on your refrigerator tells you that your blood sugar is running low, so you grab some fruit.

- While flying to your vacation destination, you realize that you forgot to turn the thermostat down at home, so you do it from your smartphone.

- Your car is about due for an oil change (using that fancy synthetic oil you like), and your mechanic is ready for you because he monitors your engine, as well as his supply of synthetics.

This might sound like the future, or maybe you've heard of one of these things already happening - both are true. They're examples of what things might be like with the "Internet of Things".

In the IoT, EVERYTHING is connected via the internet (cloud): cars, appliances, planes, security, hospitals, animals and.....yes, you. The idea is that everything will communicate, and, in the end, this communication will help us to lead better lives.

"The Internet of Things is the next generation of personal computing, whereby objects interact, potentially independently, with each other and with their environment,”

"The Internet of Things is the combination of sensors, actuators, distributed computing power..."

"Tiny detectors that can gather and relay data about location, activity, and health...", "The IoT makes it possible to monitor and control the location, condition, and behavior of objects, machinery, and devices through networks."

Here are some resources to look at that will help you understand the IoT. Take a look at them, and talk about what you think about the idea. Pros and cons.

We Need To Get The IoT Right

A Hacker's-eye View of the Internet of Things

  1. The pros of this idea shows how smart people are to be able to put stuff together like this and these forms of technology can help out the people of the world. The cons of this is that the way technology is becoming greater and greater, makes it seem that robotic figures would work and take people's jobs.

    1. This is a good point Jaxon. If we become too dependent, these systems could take over our lives and push some of us out of jobs.

    2. i agree Jaxon a lot of robots have taken most peoples manual jobs.

    3. I agree jaxon alot of peoples jobs are in jeopardy because of robots.

  2. The pros of having everything connected is you can like start your car with your phone, or turn off the lights in your house, It's all easy, but to hackers, this can be a chance to hack into someones house and take everything.

    1. Yes Hanna!! You are very right. Using your phone has many pros.

    2. I agree with you Hanna. You make a very good point. It makes things not hard at all for all these hackers to get into your life.

    3. I agree Hanna. It makes everything alot easier. But hackers will find a way to get into whatever you have.

    4. If not properly secured this is a very real and sketchy chance of this happening

    5. I agree Hanna. Good point!

  3. use the internet to start your car or lock ur house or turn off your lights in ur house
could be helpful but what happen if your smart lock on your house stop working or gets hacked then your scroude couse now your lock out or robbed

  4. There are pros to it like being able to tun off lights with your phone or seeing what's inside your refrigerator and keep track of food, but if you are put in to a system how much privacy do you really have? Just the fact that my phone has my fingerprint and no that there is facial recognition scares me. But there is no avoiding it these days.

    1. That's true, most phones have face ID or my fingerprint, and it scares me if someone hacks into it!

    2. This is a good point. You don't really have much privacy nowadays.

    3. Good point. We can't get away from what is coming at us these days. We just have to hope that the security gets stronger.

    4. Great point, putting a fingerprint or using facial recognition can sure be risky

    5. That's a really good point that i've thought about a lot actually, like how much do we actually give out about ourselves?

    6. Good point, Haley. There's a lot more information about people available on the internet that anyone could have access to.

    7. Very true! It's scary to think about.

  5. There's a lot of pros and cons to the internet of things. Being able to turn off your lights from your phone can save you some money, and being able to keep track of whats in your refrigerator can help you waste less food. But at the same time, if someone hacks that system they can turn your lights on and off whenever, and maybe alter what you're seeing on your fridge. I think there should be a limit to it, because if your entire life is run off of apps and things like that, what happens if one of them breaks or crashes?

    1. I completely agree we shouldn't rely on these things for everything because it is just technology.

    2. Good point. You can't completely depend on things like that.

    3. thats true it would be very easy to mess with someone.

  6. The pros of using the internet are, turning on ur car with your cell phone, looking whats inside your refrigerator, and a lot of more things like turning off lights and locking doors. But their is a down side to using the internet too, like getting hacked and getting personal information stolen.

  8. I think that there are many pros and cons about the Internet of Things. Pros could be being able to turn your lights off by an app or being able to lock your door off an app. But I also think that you should limit what you put the internet in charge of. If all your credentials are in your house and the locks are all controlled by an app, someone could hack into it and get to your things. So I think that the internet of things can be really cool and helpful, but also be careful of it.

    2. Tony I completley agree with you. You have to be careful with all the hackers out there.

  9. There's a lot of pros and cons of using technology for everything. You can use technology to do pretty much anything. You can lock the doors, turn on the lights, pay for things, and so much more from your phone. On the other hand people can hack you and destroy your life.

    1. That's an good point, although it is fun and handy to use, technology can be very dangerous.

  10. There are a lot of pros. It makes everything so much easier, you are able to do everything with a touch of a button. You are able to do so many things now that you wouldn't have been able to do years ago. There are also some cons about it. You put everything out there and then now you have a greater chance of getting things stolen from you. Like if you lock your house with your phone someone could get into that and unlock your house and steal things from you. I don't think that we should limit how much we use them we should just increase the security of it all.

    1. Good point Olivia, there should be very good security on things like that, or you could get a lot of your stuff stolen.

    2. I agree! Security is a huge thing when it comes to tecnology and the internet.

    3. I agree, I almost think that being able to do these things isn't worth the risk that it could bring you and your family.

  12. The pros are that it is easier to do things like buying online or to make a shopping list but now that you can just say hay Alexa order me this or that you could be buying things and not realize how much you are spending then you end up broke.

    1. That is very true, Alexa and other AI help people but they also make them irresponsible.

    2. thats true it can be very easy to spend too much money online.

  13. The pros are that people can get their days organized out with tech bu the cons are that sometimes tech doesn't work and you might be late for an appointment or miss a day.

  14. I would say that there are definitely pro's when it comes to this kind of thing because you have more control over whats going on in your environment and its just kind of cool. But there's also the con's that might really be all that easy/possible; there could be a chance that hackers could take control of a lot of thing. And if we become too dependent of technology and something happens, mass internet outage or something happens to a satellite, there would be a whole lot of chaos because we modernized everything to depend on us having wifi or service.

    1. This is a really good point, Jayme. I think it's great that we're making everything connected, but if we depend too much on technology and access to wifi and data, it could be very bad.

    2. I agree, I think relying too much on technology and the internet can really make for troubles for when something extreme happens and we are left without it for awhile.

  15. I believe that the IoT is a very useful tool for current life making certain tasks much easier. Some pros to compare this are, easier shopping, better research abilities, and easy access to information at any time. Some cons to this are the fact that you could be hacked, identity or personal information could be stolen, and viruses could easily get onto your device

    1. I agree with you, Ayden. I think it's great that we've accomplished so much with the help of technology, but people do need to be aware of the risks that come along with using such technology.

  16. I can see the pros and cons with the IoT, and a big pro for me is having my phone, insulin pump, and glucose monitor all connected. It makes it easier for me because I have to check my blood sugar significantly less than I used to, but there are some cons to it, as well, because if the sensor malfunctions, or if my phone shuts off, I stop getting readings, or if the sensor is not very accurate, it can be very dangerous because my blood sugar could be too low or way too high, and I wouldn't be treating it accordingly.

    1. very well said, sometimes we balance technology, and our lives equally but the danger and the success is like us walking on a tightrope over a abyss. One mistake and it can all go wrong

  17. The evolution of technology of cars, appliances, and other devices that makes are daily life a little bit easier, part of me thinks this is great, not having to worry about forgetting things and turning assignments or going to the store on time. On the flip side of the coin I really don't think that all this evolution is needed, If anything I also think that it makes our mind dull and lazy because we don't have to be responsible for remembering things that we have to do. A big concern i have is letting the AI systems have their independents because then who knows what they will do.

  20. There are many good sides to everything being connected to the internet, like easy access to emergency services. You can also turn off lights or stoves and lock doors remotely if you forget to. The downside to this is that other people could gain access to a smart home, too. More connection to the internet means more things for potential hackers.

  22. I think that the internet can really help you out in life and make your life easier, when things are all connected. It can save you a trip and help you keep your home safe by being able to monitor your home. Being able to control things so easily can be really convenient in life but it can also come with some cons. Thing like hackers can get into your home, and make your life difficult. The internet can be a dangerous place.

  23. There are many different pros and cons to having everything connected. For example, being able to do everything from your phone from starting your car, to turning lights on and off. But if hackers were to get into those things, everything is already connected so it makes it easier for them.
