Your Online Image #2

Your Online Image #2

You are the young manager of a local ice cream parlor that is beloved by local families. You are looking to hire some teens for the summer when the shop is open late every evening. You require an application and at least one reference. It occurs to you that you could look on Facebook to find out a bit more about the applicants.

What might you find that would make you not hire someone?

Is there anything wrong with using Facebook in this way?

Below are a couple of articles that talk about how employers use social media to help screen applicants.

70% of employers are snooping candidates’ social media profiles

Employer’s using social media in hiring process: Why do they do it?

  1. You can find fake accounts that would apply to your business, facebook is a great idea although there are some people that would apply as a joke to bring your hopes up or even try to snoop on your business. Instead of applying online, you can go to the shop itself and get an application there.

    1. This is a good point Jaxon. You should never completely trust online applications, because there are people who will try and trick you.

    2. I agree jaxon i wouldn't fully trust people unless I met them in person.

    1. Good point Gage, you can see if that person is serious about what they do.

    2. You have a point, but I think social media does show how a person behaves

  3. If I was hiring someone and looked at their facebook some things that would make me not hire them would be pictures of partying or anything that looks irresponsible. I do not think that there is anything wrong with this because it is public.

    1. I agree with you, Haley! I think a lot of people forget that what's on Facebook is public, and therefore employers can look at your account to see what you're up to.

    2. Good point. Someone's Facebook is a good way to tell if they'll be a responsible worker.

  4. Finding posts speaking poorly of past or present employers might make me consider not hiring someone, as well as posts about them partying or doing drugs while underage. I think it's fine that employers are using social media to make sure the person they're looking to hire is a good fit for their job. It provides a little more insight into what kind of a person the applicant is.

    1. Yes I agree, I think using socIal media to learn more about the person is not bad at all, and can prevent future complications in the job.

    2. I think this is a very good point Cas. I would not like to hire someone that would publicly speak badly about their past employers.

    3. I agree I think you can learn a lot about people from their social media.

    4. I agree because like Haley said you can learn quite a bit about a person from their social media.

  5. If I was hiring someone I would look on their Facebook for sure. Most people post everything online and this could tell you a lot about that person. I do not think that there is anything wrong with it because that person is posting it for people to see. It is a great tool to see how this person is online and an idea of what they are like.

    1. I agree, most people, especially teens, post most of their lives on social media, you could definitely see what kind of person they are.

    2. That makes total sense, being able to see the person you are hiring by looking at their social media page is a good thing to do. You can see what kind of person they are, and activities that they do in their off time.

  6. If I were hiring someone and I looked on their social media and saw pictures of them drinking, doing drugs, or going to parties all the time that would stop me from hiring them. I would want someone responsible and reliable. I don't think it's wrong to do this because if they post it they should know that it's out there for anyone to see.

    1. I would do the same thing, I don't want a drug addict working for me. A lot of people don't understand that people that want to hire you look at your social media to see if you can work.

    2. That is a great point Camryn! People who are posting stupid things, aren't going to get that job.

    3. I agree, I think that you should be able to search and find out if they are capable of doing the job you give them.

  7. I think looking on social media is a great idea when it comes to hiring someone, it shows more of their personality so you get to know them better, but if they were drinking or drugs, or just doing stupid stuff in general and posting it, it shows they don't have responsibility

    1. I agree with you, Hanna! I think what people post on social media is a good reflection of how they can be in real life, and if someone was posting photos of them partying every other night, it would show that they're not a responsible worker.

    2. I agree with you. The internet is a great tool when looking at who to work for you. You wouldn't want someone who is fine with posting about all the drinking and drugs they do.

    3. I agree with you. Looking at someone's social media is a good way to find out their personality and if they would be a good worker or not

    4. This is a good point Hanna. Social media is a good way to learn stuff about people.

    5. I agree Hanna because if they post that stuff on their social media they aren't responsible for the job.

  12. I think that looking at social media if you are an employer is a good idea. I think that it shows you the type pf person that you are looking to hire is, and to see if the person is responsible or not. If the person really is the person they said they were on the application, or not.

    1. I agree. A lot of the time people will lie on their application. The use of the internet can get rid of that and would help in the work world. The things you post on the internet can tell alot about a person.

  13. Someone's Facebook account is a good way to determine what kind of worker they would be. If they posted about how much they hate their last boss, or videos of them doing their job incorrectly, I would probably not hire them because they would likely have the same attitude for any other job they get.

  14. I think looking on social media is a good way to find stuff out about who you want to hire. You can find stuff out about a person that you may have never known otherwise. You can see if they are into partying or stuff like that. You can also see if they are into volunteering and helping out around their community.

    1. I agree Gracie! If they are partying and stuff like that I would not hire them, but they could be doing good which would make me want to hire them.

  15. I think it is perfectly fine to use online sites like Facebook to find out more about a future employee. I think it is important to be able the gather information about the person and see who they are as a person. You want to see if they are responsible and capable of performing the job you are hiring them for. Anything they post that deems them as irresponsible or inappropriate would make me think twice about hiring them to work for me.

  16. There's nothing wrong with using Facebook or other social media platforms to scope out new employees. It's a valid way to see who you're hiring and making sure if you want them representing your store.

  17. A person's facebook account is a great way to determine if someone is responsible enough to work at your store. And if you want them representing you and your business. I don't think that there is anything wrong with using facebook or any other social media in this way.

  19. I don't think it is a bad thing to snoop if you're thinking of hiring someone because a lot of the things people put online is how they're going act in person and how they choose to portray themselves. Because of that I don't think it would be a bad idea to look and see what they post.

  20. No I don't think their is anything wrong with using facebook, because they are the ones posting it for people to see. And when you are looking at their account if you see a lot of pictures of them partying and doing drugs and stuff like that, then you will know not to hire them.
