The Cloud
You've probably heard it said that the world has gotten smaller. This is true because, since the development of the Internet (the 'Cloud') and such things as Tweeting, texting, instant messaging, social networking (Facebook, Instagram), we've grown much closer. The distance between us, geographically, doesn't matter near as much anymore.
In many ways, this is a good thing. But, in some ways - not so much. While the world has grown closer together, we're also closer to those people who would try to hurt us or take advantage of us. Most people are good - but it's easier than ever for those that aren't to target people who aren't prepared, or aware of the dangers.
So, you've just met a student who has NEVER been on the internet. Their family just moved to the area, and just signed up for internet access at home for the first time. Knowing what you know right now, what would you warn that person about? What would you tell them to be careful of, when they're on the Web? How would you tell them to behave - what precautions should they take?
You don't have to look this up - base it on what you already know - what you've already learned. You CAN research a little on the internet if you need to...
REMEMBER: Each week's blog is worth a total of 30 points:
1st response: 10
respond to two classmates: 20 (10ea)
Total = 30pts
These points add up - there are at least 10-12 posts throughout the semester, which add up to a decent percentage of your grade! (An EASY percentage.)

If I were to tell someone new to the internet what to be careful of, I would tell them to not post any personal information like their address or credit card number or anything that someone could steal from you.
ReplyDeleteYes Olivia, I think this info could really help someone.
DeleteGood Point! If you post something personal, it could ruin your future
DeleteIf someone had come up to me and not known the internet the first thing I would warn them about is to not share their password with anyone, and also no personal info like their address and social security number and stuff. Second I would tell them to be wary of creepers on social media, people that say they want to be your friend and stalk your profile and constantly try to contact you.
ReplyDeleteI agree Tony. A lot of people act as someone they are not online and it could really harm someone new to the internet who is not sure how everything works.
DeleteThat is a great point Tony! People can be naive to giving away certain personal information, which can be a VERY dangerous activity.
DeleteYou are totally right Tony! Sharing your password even with people you trust can not be a good thing. Also you never know who you are talking about on the internet so you must be careful of internet friends. People can get ahold of your information and do terrible things with it and use it to their benefit
DeleteI agree tony, giving out your personal information is how people can get hurt. especially if you give out your social security, someone could take your identity.
DeleteI would warn someone new to the internet that they shouldn't put out personal information publicly, or share it with strangers. A lot of people aren't who they say they are on the internet, so be careful about who you're talking to, and what you're sharing with them.

DeleteThis is a good point Cas. You can never really be sure who you're talking to when you're on the internet, because it's easy to lie when you're not talking face to face.
DeleteIf I were to warn someone new to the internet about what to be careful of I would tell them not to accept friend requests from people they don't know or give them any personal information to them. They could be trying to harm you or take advantage of you. (Specifically for younger kids)
ReplyDeleteThis is very true. If you give too much information out you could find yourself in a situation you don't want to be in.
DeleteOne thing I would tell someone new to the internet would be to not send or post any private pictures of yourself. Once you post/send a picture you can never take it back and it's always out there. People can screenshot it and send it to other places.
ReplyDelete100% true. If those pictures get out it could ruin your life. You could get involved with the cops. Then if parents find out the reputation you now have in the adult eyes is not good. You can never take that back once you hit that send button.
DeleteThis is a really good point, Gracie! I think sometimes people forget about the permanence of photos and the internet, because even if you think the photo's been deleted, there's no telling who may have it.
DeleteI think this is a very big part of the TO NOT DO list, you're totally right in what you said because it happens to a lot of teens today. Also you can get blackmailed from pictures
DeleteThe first thing I would tell someone new to the internet, is to never tell anyone your password, and don't make an easy password like 1111. If someone gets your password, they can get your personal information and spend your money. Just be careful on the internet.
ReplyDeleteI think that this is a great point, but I think you should also tell them about some other things to be wary about
DeleteYa Tony this is a great point. I only needed to talk about one thing to warn people, not many different things, you goon.
DeleteI just think that it would be more helpful to talk about more than one thing, so then people can see the multiple things to be wary about, not JUST ONE, goon
DeleteGood point Ty the harder it is to remember a password the harder it is for another person to figure it out.
DeleteIf someone was new to the internet I would warn them not to put any private information or don't accept follow or friend requests unless you know who the person is because it could be somebody stalking your information if you don't know who they are.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you. It can be hard to tell who's actually who they say they are on the internet unless you know the person. Putting private information on the internet is also risky, and really, you shouldn't do it at all.
DeleteI agree because some people are carless with some information or don't realize that it can be very dangerous to let random people follow them or give them personal information.
DeleteI agree with you Ty, but Tony is right you should tell them a little bit more to worry about

ReplyDeleteIf I had to tell someone what to look out for on the internet, I would tell them to watch out for viruses and fake news. It is really easy to read fake news and think it is real. But the internet also has a lot of helpful information.
ReplyDeleteThis is a great point Ross. There's a lot of fake all around nowadays, especially on the internet!
DeleteGood point ross fake news is a problem on the internet.
DeleteRoss has a very good point, a lot of young minds have there opinions mixed and changed for the wrong reasons due to fake news, A big thing that bothers me that correlates with fake news is democratic propaganda
DeleteIf someone was new to the internet I would tell them to be careful of what you read on the internet because there is a chance that it may not be true.
ReplyDeleteVery true Nate, good point! Fake news is a big problem on the internet, and you must be careful of what you see.
DeleteI agree Nate, it's hard to tell the difference between fake news are real news, so they should be careful when trusting a random source.
DeleteOne thing I would tell someone to be careful of on the internet is deceiving ads. Many websites try to get you to click on things, then you will have many weird ads and glitches on your device
ReplyDeleteYes Hanna! You really have to be careful about what you click on, on the internet because a lot of stuff can actually be harmful to your device and lead to viruses.
DeleteIf I were to educate someone who is new to the internet, I would tell them to be careful what you post. You shouldn't post private information you don't want many people knowing or hurtful words because once it is out there, you can't get it back. Things you post on social media can really come back to hurt you in the future.
ReplyDeleteVery good point Kyle! If your personal information gets out bad things could happen. I am very glad we could agree on the topic.
DeleteYes Kylee! Saying something mean could hurt someone else, and your future.
DeleteI agree with you! Everything is pretty permanent once it's out on the internet, and if people such as prospective employers see that you've posted some things that show you're not fit to work for their company, you could lose a job opportunity because of it.
DeleteI agree with you Kyle.If you cyberbully somebody it could definetely hurt somebodys feelings and your future.
DeleteThe main thing I would tell someone who'd never been on the internet is never share any personal information, such as passwords, age, and location. Additionally, be careful what you post on social media because you can get in a whole lot of trouble and it could also potentially make it difficult to find jobs in the future.
ReplyDeleteI agree Jayme, there's a lot of places where you could get scammed, so you have to be careful.
DeleteThis is very true. posting the wrong thing can hurt you very much.
DeleteIf I met someone who was new to the internet, I would tell them to be careful of things you read on the internet. There are a lot of scammers and people who want to take your information, so you have to be careful of what you click on, and where you put your information.
ReplyDeleteI think that that is very good advice, don't believe fake news or get your identity stolen.
DeleteAmazing advice! Scammers area a huge problem on the internet.
DeleteSomething I would tell someone who is new to the internet to look out for? Well first I would start off by telling them to research their download sites, so they know they aren't getting scammed or downloading bots, viruses, etc...
ReplyDeleteVery true, alot of downloaded or not well known sites do hold many viruses and are usually hidden from novice users.
DeleteThat's true. Scammers can take all of your information just from downloading something onto your computer.
DeleteIf someone I met was new to the internet, I would advise them to never share any personal information, and be careful of things you read. Scammers can take your personal data, and there's lots of fake news on the internet.
ReplyDeleteI think that would definitely be a very good thing to warn people about.
Deletei agree with you haley n when someone is new at using the internet we should them how propley use it
DeleteThe internet is a tool with a vast amount of knowledge if someone is new to using it and wanted to dive in I would first warn the user to be careful what they look up. I would explain that some websites can give your device a virus and also tell the user that some information can be fake so don't believe everything you see.
ReplyDeleteThere are so many dangers when it comes to the internet because literally any person can be on the internet. I would warn them of predators and anyone that is sketchy or someone that you know shouldn't be talking to you. I would suggest to keep your page private until you understand what to do if you do get odd messages from people. I would also suggest to not put your personal information out there because it is very easy for people to find you with very little information. And just be careful what you click on when looking things up.
ReplyDeletei fully agree with you the internet is vary dangers sometimes
Deletethe internet sometimes is bad to go on because there are bad thins like ads that can get you information like your password or information about you
ReplyDeleteif some come up to asks what is the internet you help them and explain to them what is good and bad about the internet
